Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.

  • New to yoga? The Gentle and Hatha classes move a little slower. So if you don’t have any prior yoga experience, that can be a good start! Private classes are a great way to start too – everybody is different. Check out our Take the Plunge package for a series of three private classes!

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows you the freedom to stretch and move easily. Dress in layers so you can adjust if you get warm or chilled.

  • Bring a yoga mat. Don’t have one? No worries. We have mats you may borrow.

  • Avoid wearing strong perfumes and/or lotions on your hands and/or feet as they can cause you to slip.

  • Drink plenty of water before and after class. Feel free to bring a bottle of room temperature water. We have bottles of water available for $1.

  • Eat a light snack or meal two or so hours before practicing.

When you arrive

  • Arrive 10 minutes before class time so you can check-in, meet the instructor, and settle in for your practice.

  • Leave your personal items in the lobby. Remember to turn off your mobile phone.

  • Remove your shoes before entering our practice space and be prepared to remove your socks (unless you have a foot condition that necessitates keeping your socks on).

  • Enter the practice space quietly. Try to keep noise to a minimum when setting up your mat and props. Be aware of engaging in any conversations that could interrupt a fellow classmate’s “settling in” time before class.

  • Communicate if you have any injuries, limitations or concerns so the teacher knows before class so she can help you practice safely.

  • Make space for others as more people come into class and avoid stepping on mats when entering or leaving the practice space.

During class

  • Breathe…we can’t say this enough. If you aren’t breathing mindfully…it’s just not yoga.

  • Rest or modify as needed, keeping variations appropriate to the level of the class you are attending. Instructors will often give appropriate options for modifying or advancing a posture.

  • Do not “push” your way into postures you are not ready to practice. More challenging poses come with time and practice. Forcing should never be a part of your practice.

  • Practice ahimsa (compassion/non-harming) for yourself….be aware of what your body tells you and honor where it wants to go or not go at that moment. Avoid postures or movements that are painful to you.

  • If you experience pain or discomfort in a pose, adjust the posture or come out of the pose slowly. Ask for support from the Teacher during class or after class.

  • Leave your ego at the door and be patient with yourself when practicing yoga. Try not to judge yourself too harshly or negatively. Appreciate where you are and what you can do.

  • Don’t skip the end of class. This is your chance for final relaxation (Savasana). During this time you are in a conscious relaxation state and your body is reaping the benefits of your practice. Allow your mind and body this final chance to rest before heading on to your next “to do”!

  • Please help us keep our mats and props clean by wiping them down with mat cleaner after class.

If you arrive late for a class

We all run late from time to time. No worries. Those are the days we need yoga the most! Once you arrive, take a seat in the lobby and center yourself for several breaths. Please wait to enter the practice space until the class completes the beginning “centering/meditation/breath work” time. You may check in after the class.
